What are exosomes?
When the skin is young, its natural population of stem cells is at its peak and acts as the body's first line of defence. Because more stem cells are present, younger skin fights ageing better. With age, we notice that our skin regenerates and recovers more slowly — visible as longer healing of wounds and scars, or a longer recovery period after ablative and invasive medical procedures.
Stem cells release nano-vesicles (~30–150 nm) called exosomes, or extracellular vesicles (EVs). Exosomes act as messengers (couriers) between cells, carrying important information for tissue healing, skin regeneration and faster recovery. They carry a vital "message" created inside stem cells to communicate with other cells, directing them to function in a very specific way.
